New album MONTANHAS out now!

Lively, original, rhythmic, melodic, authentic, varied - this is the sound of the music written by composer and saxophonist Tiago Barros.
In his pieces, elements of Brazilian folklore merge with those of the jazz tradition and create a very characteristic sound that appeals to a large audience.
Improvisation plays an important role in the performances of the quintet, it is also one of the greatest common denominators of jazz and Brazilian music.
The pieces are played by five virtuoso instrumentalists, who are at home on stage and take the audience with their creativity and joy of playing into a unique musical universe as soon as the first note sounds.
Clube da Esquina Basel
Tiago Barros (s), Aliéksey Vianna (g), José Luiz Martins (p), Stephan Kurmann (b), Konrad Wiemann (dr)
The band around saxophonist Tiago Barros is dedicated to researching and interpreting the music of "Clube da Esquina" (Esquina: Corner), a group of musicians, composers and poets from Brazil's fourth largest state, Minas Gerais. The group always met on the same street corner in the big city of Belo Horizonte to make music, compose, philosophize and, of course, drink something.
The result of these meetings is a music that takes cultural impulses from the whole of Brazilian folk music and creates a synthesis that perhaps only Minas Gerais in the heart of the country can produce. Minas Gerais was the economic and cultural centre of Brazil in colonial times. Its landscape is characterized among other things by green hills and (mostly) disused railway tracks. The Mineiros are regarded as introverted and rather quiet because they are surrounded by mountains and not by the sea - this is where Brazil's earliest art music originated.
Milton Nascimento is the most internationally renowned musician to have emerged from the movement. In 1972, together with Lô Borges and the Clube Kollektiv, he released a groundbreaking double album entitled "Clube da Esquina". The collective "Clube da Esquina" thus wrote one of the most important chapters in the history of Brazilian popular music.
Nationally and internationally known artists who emerged from the movement Clube da Esquina: Milton Nascimento, Toninho Horta, Márcio Borges, Lô Borges, Wagner Tiso, Beto Guedes, Tavinho Moura, Fernando Brant, Nivaldo Ornellas, Ronaldo Bastos
Forró do Hermeto
Forró is dance, partyl and at the same time the name of traditional music from northern Brazil.
Hermeto Pascoal is probably one of the most famous, weirdest and at the same time most productive musical personalities that Brazil has produced. His countless compositions are a wild mixture of Brazilian rhythms, melodic fantasies, influences from rock music and a pinch of free jazz. Surprising and untamed.
The quartet around the Brazilian guitarist Oliver Pellet, who lives in Basel, takes on the music of Hermeto and brings the Forró to the stage.

Brazil: a country of extremes, a melting pot of different peoples and cultures. It is obvious that Brazil's musical universe is also enormously diverse and fascinating. The Brasil Trio takes us on a musical journey to their homeland. The three musicians from São Paulo and Minas Gerais interpret a fine selection of pieces from the MPB (música popular brasileria) with great creativity, skill and enthusiasm. These include composers such as João Donato, Tom Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Djavan and a few others.

"His music strucks me as lively and original. His Brazilian roots and all jazz tradition melting and creating a very healthy, rhythmic and harmonic combination. It's a pleasure to hear it and a valid addition to the musical world."
Guillermo Klein - composer, arranger, pianist
The first album with original compositions by saxophonist and composer Tiago Barros was released in February 2016.
The title of the album "Por um bom motivo" means "For a good reason" in German, whereas in Portuguese the word "motivo" can be understood as motive in the musical sense as well as motive in the sense of reason. On the album there are four pieces whose titles all contain the word "motivo".
Although the compositions are harmonically relatively complex, the melodies always seem catchy and vocal, they never lose the lightness and playfulness of Brazilian folklore.
The album is characterized by a warm and refined sound, not least thanks to the extraordinary musicians. The Rhythm Section is Brazilian through and through, consisting of creative and virtuoso instrumentalists who provide the basis for this sound.
The melodies, the heart of the musical work, were all arranged for brass, inspired by typical jazz formations. Improvisation is present in all pieces and is one of the greatest common denominators of jazz and Brazilian music.
